Of all the disingenuous actions by supporters of the largest public project in the region's history - the Columbia River Crossing MegaBridge - few are as cynical as calling the new design a ten-lane bridge.

The multibillion dollar boondoggle, aka the MegaBridge, aka the Columbia River Crossing (CRC), continues to run up against two inescapable facts: it's too expensive, and it will increase global warming pollution at a time where we need to be dramatically reducing it.

While CRC project staff have tried to massage the cost numbers (from $4,200 million to a mere $3,500 million) by delaying parts of the project until later ("look, we can afford the Ferrari because we won't pay some of the car loan until later"), the pollution numbers can't be ignored.

The BETC has brought jobs and revenue to Oregon

Today, Oregonians get seven percent of our energy from wind – an impressive first surge in moving beyond dirty foreign fossil fuels, fighting climate change, and creating jobs with local clean energy. Yet we must do more, as Oregon still gets 40% of our energy from coal.

Today's Medford Mail Tribune has a fascinating story about local discord over the plan to spend $100 million from increased gas taxes on a bypass near Highway 62 and White City in Southern Oregon.

This week we're seeing another critical election come down to a razor-thin margin: the recall of Clastop County Commissioner Ann Samuelson is currently passing, by a 1,013 to 1,009 count. Samuelson had come under fire in part due to her actions supporting the Bradwood Landing LNG facilty.

In case you missed it: In Friday's Oregonian, Governor Ted Kulongoski stands up for salmon in the Columbia and Snake Rivers and against another dithering administration response, writing:

This morning the Savage Rapids coffer dam was breached, culminating over 20 years of hard work to restore the Rogue River to freedom. A dam has blocked the river since 1921, and was deemed one of Oregon's worst impediments to wild salmon passage.

Congrats to WaterWatch of Oregon and other groups who worked hard on this project!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the "Ecoroofs Everywhere" event at the Rocket Building in Portland. Ecoroofs are planted roofs with drainage systems, that take the place of conventional roofs. While traditionally planted in sedum and other inedible plants, last night's tour was of the roof of the Rocket Building at 11th and East Burnside.

Tonight, Democratic Party precinct committee people will gather in North Portland to select three to five candidates for the Senate District 22 seat, which was recently vacated by Senator Margaret Carter.

Those nominees then go to the Multnomah County Commissioners, who appoint the new Senator.

Oregon's freshman Senator Jeff Merkley, who had a lifetime 96% rating from OLCV, is profiled in today's Washington Spectator.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance has an excellent summary of what's happened to the proposed bicycle and pedestrian facilities in the design of the region's largest-ever infrastructure project, the Columbia River Crossing multi-billion-dollar MegaBridge.

In short: they've gone from 12 and 26 feet wide to a single dark underbridge design, mostly 16 feet wide.

So says Idaho state Rep. Eric Anderson about zebra and quagga mussels, that threaten to overtake northwest waterways. While they have yet to be introduced to Washington and Oregon, a boat infested with quagga mussels was stopped on Washington's roads this spring.

If introduced, they could cost the state tens of millions of dollars to control. That's what the Oregon Conservation Network prioritized passing a bill to create and fund boat check stations, and why the legislature passed a dozen bills to fight invasive species.

Last week Governor Kulongoski gave notice he was considering vetoing two bills relating to Oregon's commitment to clean energy: HB 2940 and HB 2472.
